Once you get this login to your account and setup your site.
Its that simple!
Are your servers Windows 2003 or Linux?
All of our servers run Windows 2003 and IIS6.
2. Domain Information
I already have a domain, can I transfer it?
Absolutely! Many of our customers do this. When you sign up, you will be sent an e.mail from ZIG Hosting giving you details of the correct DNS servers to use. These DNS servers are: ns1.zighosting.com and ns2.zighosting.com
You will need to log in to the company that you have your domain registered through and change the Name Servers. This varies from company to company. If you have any questions call their Customer Support number. If you can't figure it out we will be happy to try and assist you in any way possible.
What are DNS records?
DNS records tell other computers on the Internet where your site is. Every domain name on the internet (eg zighosting.com, cnn.com, msn.com etc) has at least two DNS records. Our DNS records are:
ns1.zighosting.com and ns2.zighosting.com or ns3.zighosting.com and ns4.zighosting.com
These DNS records are essential to your site functioning, as they tell other computers which IP address, or remote computer your site resides on. For example, if you were to look at www.zighosting.com your web browser would communicate as follows:
Hi, I want to look at zighosting.com. What are the DNS servers? They are ns1.zighosting.com and ns2.zighosting.com
Hi ns1.zighosting.com, I'm looking for www.zighosting.com. Where is it? It's at 65.15.47.76
Thanks! Hi 65.15.47.76, can I see the zighosting.com site please?
65.15.47.76 is an IP address which uniquely identifies each computer on the internet, whether they be a casual net surfer (like many of your visitors) or a server (like our computers, that store your web site.)
RIPE, the council that issues IP addresses has dictated that web sites should be hosted on shared IP addresses. This is to try and stop the IP shortage crisis.
Because of this we have to host more than one web site per IP address. If you type this IP address into your computer, there are several sites it can end up at, as there are several sites hosted on the same IP. Our servers detect this, and the default answer is not to show a web site. This means that you cannot access your site from the IP address only.
I want to use another mail server, can you change my MX records?
Yes, you can create custom DNS and MX records for your site. Just remember that putting in the wrong settings can result in your web site not functioning properly or at all.
Please modify these records only if you are comfortable and knowledgeable in this area. We will charge an hourly rate to fix or help you get the settings correct again.
3. Uploading Your Site (FTP)
DO NOT DELETE THE DB, LOGS OR WWWROOT FOLDER FROM YOUR ACCOUNT! DOING SO MAY RESULT IN YOUR SITE NOT WORKING PROPERLY OR AT ALL!
What FTP host name do I use?
You can use the external IP address of your domain name, ftp.yoursite.com or yoursite.com.
What directory do I put my web site files in?
When you login you will see a directory like /yoursite.com/wwwroot. This is the directory/folder to upload your web site files to. You can upload your database files to yoursite.com/db.
What FTP settings do I use?
Here is the generic FTP information for your domains...
You can find this in your Control Panel account under:
Home > Domains > yourdomain.com > FTP Accounts As an example, if your site was www.yoursite.com you would generally use these FTP details:
FTP Hostname: ftp.yoursite.com or yoursite.com FTP Username: yoursite.com FTP Password: [The one you entered when you signed up or set this to] * Path: /yoursite.com/wwwroot
* If you haven't set the password then it will be the same as your account password. If this does not work, then just reset the password to whatever you want it to be. You can find the instructions to do this further down in this FAQ section.
What Directories/Folders are required and shouldn't be deleted?
Remember that anything you upload to the wwwroot folder will be accessible on the Internet. You would typically name your home page "index.html, index.htm, index.asp, etc." This name sets this file to be the default or first page that opens up when www.yoursite.com is typed into a web browser.
When you go into the path /yoursite.com you will see 3 folders: db, logs and wwwroot. You DO NOT want to remove ANY of these 3 folders as they are very important to the proper functioning of your web site. In the wwwroot folder you will see a cgi-bin folder. You DO NOT remove this folder either.
What do I use to upload my site?
You will need an FTP program to upload your site. It is possible to use later versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer (versions 5 and upwards) to do this, but we recommend going to Downloads.com or Tucows, Inc and search for 'FTP client.' There are many free ones available for download.
What are the default pages?
A default page is one that our web server will show when a site visitor goes to your web site. For example, going to www.zighosting.com is the same as going to www.zighosting.com/index.asp This is often called the startup, default or index page. Within your site, you can call the default page any of the following:
index.asp
index.aspx
index.htm
index.html
index.php
index.pl
default.htm
default.asp
default.aspx
_holding.asp
Where is my CGI Bin?
Your cgi-bin is in your root folder i.e. wwwroot/cgi-bin. This means you can access the directory from www.yoursite.com/cgibin
I cannot delete a file with FTP!
This could be caused by several things. Most likely it is probably because the file is open or in use. If this problem seems to keep happening, under rare occations that server may need to be rebooted. If you feel this is the case, contact us and we will take care of this issue.
If you need to replace the file with another one and you find that nothing will work, just e.mail support to have it removed.
